Having successfully obtained planning permission for houses on two other sites in this Dorset village, Oriel Architecture was approached to design a new bungalow within a large garden. The site, which is surrounded by houses and gardens on three sides and a railway embankment on the other, demanded a design which not only met the requirements of the client, but was sensitive to potential concerns about overlooking. Working closely with our client we developed and modified the brief during the design process and produced a layout which both responded to the client’s needs and aspirations, and which was simple in construction terms and therefore economical to build.
The rooms have generous south and east facing windows onto a private courtyard, and the shallow monopitch roof and low profile of the building minimises the impact on neighbouring dwellings. As usual the planning application was accompanied by an analysis of the site and context and a thorough explanation of the rationale behind the proposed design which helped to secure a planning consent on this tricky site for our client.
The project is currently under construction.
