This family business is a long established vehicle repair business based in Marnhull, Somerset.
Their premises occupy a prominent position in the street scene and it was recognised from the outset that the forecourt building, which is believed to have been built in the 1930s as a car showroom, adds particular character to the area and is something of a local landmark.
However, the building is now very dilapidated and needs to be replaced and the client wishes to replace it with a modern facility accommodating a reception, shop and sales area, office and staff facilities. It was decided that the building should occupy the same footprint as the existing, and that its character should reflect the nature of the existing building.
It was therefore decided that the design should follow the simple form of the existing building with robust detailing to reflect the building type, and with external materials – fibre cement lapped weatherboard cladding on the walls, and profiled fibre cement sheet covering for the roof – that should closely resonate with the painted timber cladding and profiled asbestos cement roof sheets which cover the original structure.
This design solution will provide up to date and comfortable facilities, and will also significantly enhance the appearance of the garage within the street scene and the public realm whilst respecting and recognising the importance of retaining a link with the past and the affection which locals feel for this building.
